I swatted almost 50 flies in our RV after waking. We did not even venture outside this stay due to the invasion of the flies you could see swarming from the window. The flies were absolutely annoying and seemed to have multiplied. SECOND STAY - It was worse than the first. We also had no cell service, but cell towers were visible from the park. We did not get to witness the "star show" due to the bright moon. Two Campaigns in One Experience two unique single-player campaigns taking place during the Black Mesa Incident that started off the events of the Half-Life universe.

In addition, the sticker burrs in our dog's paws was a nightmare for walking her. Operation: Black Mesa is a fan-made reimagining of Gearboxs Half-Life Opposing Force and Half-Life Blue Shift. This could be controlled by emptying the uncovered, overflowing trash bins more often and spraying around them. Reviews mentioned the fly problem here and it persisted for us as well. Supply is a good 20+ mile distance, so come prepared. The limited number of RV sites had recently been re-graveled and there are nice shaded tent sites along a creek bed that has dried up because of the drought. We had reservations here (unfortunately) twice on our recent trip to and from Colorado.įIRST STAY - Unique park that offers campers a view of petrified wood and and idea of what a "Jurassic Park" was like. We didn't have kids with us, but there's lots for them to do here including a wonderful sandy swimming hole. We were there in March and temps varied A LOT. Wildlife! It's not a huge park, but scenic. We did not do the entire Black Mesa pinnacle hike (outside the park, maybe 20 minute drive) but it is worth a drive over that way. Very nice for checking messages etc since we were a long ways from home. We had no cell service except right at the ranger office, where it was great. We have cut rate cell plan that uses Verizon network (but it doesn't always work that way). This place is really off the beaten track, which is what we were looking for. We were advised by other campers not to visit the petroglyph canyon that is about a 50 minute drive - they said the road is really rough.

Some cool nearby attractions if you are willing to drive a bit. We didn't bring our spotting scope and wished we would have for the water birds, great horned owl, and the night sky. The little ranger station is neat - don't miss the snake display! It had limited hours this time of year. Hiking trails are not extensive, so we went off trail to get more mileage. We like to watch birds and even though we were too early for most migrants, we enjoyed what was there. Loved the scenery, beautiful creek, hiking trails. Very few campers here during our visit (2 or 3 others). Used the campground bathroom 1 time and it was spotless. The hill there gives a little protection from wind. We thought the best spaces were the area when you first come in (we were in space #2). We spent 3 nights here in a travel trailer.
